What Are Autoimmune Diseases?

Autoimmune disease is a category representing more than 80 conditions. These conditions are highlighted by a person’s own immune system attacking healthy tissue. A healthy immune system defends against infection and disease, repairing the body and even preventing cancers. However, in autoimmune disease the immune system mistakes healthy tissue as “bad” and attacks it. This weakens the function of the tissue and can even turn life threatening.

Some well known autoimmune diseases are type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), psoriasis, polyneuropathy, and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. These are just a few of more common autoimmune conditions.

Autoimmune Disease Symptoms

Since autoimmune diseases can occur in separate areas of the body it is hard to list specific symptoms. An autoimmune condition like rheumatoid arthritis will have joint pain, while a condition like psoriasis will develop thick, scaly patches. Some autoimmune conditions, such as lupus, attack multiple parts of the body, so can have joint, skin, and organ symptoms. There’s typically not a “black and white” diagnoses.

Some commons symptoms seen are:

Fatigue

Joint Pain and Swelling

Skin Problems

Abdominal Pain or Digestive Issues

Recurring Fever

Swollen Glands

“My rheumatoid arthritis has seen significant improvements since starting. I’m almost completely off my medications. Been able to get off Prednisone and Orencia for months now. And lower my Methotrexate dose. At present, RA symptoms are not significant, I think normal aches for a 61 yr old who took too may rides in the box with the flashing red light on top. I think I’m on my way to being medication free.”

How it works

Every few weeks, we check in. We track what’s improving, what isn’t, and adjust your plan. If something doesn’t serve you, we pause or change it. You’re never locked into a path.

“We build plans the S.T.E.M. way—Safety-first. Transparent. Evidence-informed. Mindful.”

Your body is built to repair itself—but sometimes it needs help getting that process back on track. Integrative medicine doesn’t try to force healing; it aims to support and guide your body’s own systems to do what they’re designed to do.
Here’s how many regenerative therapies may work in principle:

  • Signal the body to repair – Certain therapies release molecules that act like messengers, encouraging nearby cells to begin the repair process. These are called paracrine signals, and they may include proteins, growth factors, and tiny particles called extracellular vesicles.
  • Calm unnecessary inflammation – Chronic inflammation can prevent healing. Our therapies aim to help the body dial down overactive immune responses, making space for repair to occur.
  • Tolerance restoration – Encourage the immune system to better distinguish “self” from “threat,” reducing misdirected attacks on healthy tissue.
  • Signal correction – Designed to calm runaway cytokines and support regulatory pathways so inflammation is proportionate, not perpetual.
  • Trigger & barrier focus – Address common drivers (microbiome shifts, antigen load, leaky barriers) to make tissues less reactive over time.

We we love it

It’s care that works with your immune system, not against it.
When autoimmunity drives symptoms, the goal isn’t to “shut the system off”—it’s to rebalance it. Instead of relying only on broad immunosuppression, we use strategies designed to calm misdirected signals, support barrier integrity, and preserve your natural defenses. We love this approach because it’s:

Balance over blanket suppression
We focus on immune modulation, not immune shutdown. The aim is to quiet the wrong signals while keeping you protected—so your system can defend you without attacking you. Changes to medications are coordinated with your prescribing clinician.

Flare‑ and function‑focused
Pain relief matters—but so do fewer flares, steadier energy, and better daily function. We track outcomes you feel (fatigue, pain, GI/skin/joint symptoms) alongside labs and adjust accordingly.

Active—not “watch and wait”
Rather than hoping rest alone turns the corner, we engage the immune environment: targeted biologic signaling, nutrition and microbiome support, barrier care (gut/skin/joints), stress/sleep strategies, herbal medicines. All integrated to reduce reactivity over time.

Personalized and co‑managed
Autoimmunity isn’t one thing. We tailor plans to your triggers, tissues involved, and lifestyle, monitor progress, and co‑manage with your specialists. If something isn’t helping, we change it—you’re never stuck in a passive role.

Note: Our therapies are designed to modulate—not cure—autoimmunity. Results vary by condition and individual. Some options may be adjunctive, off‑label, or investigational; we’ll discuss evidence, risks, and alternatives before you decide.
